MISSION
Het Concreet is a Tilburg based sound collective committed to working with analog electronic instruments. The technical constitution of analog interfaces such as tape, circuit boards and mixing desks challenges us to rethink our methods of composing, working together and creating new material.

Artistic practices are defined by and formed through the interfaces we choose to work with. We strongly feel it is important to question the conditions that these interfaces impose on us. Through artistic research, we develop a practice that is both critical and constructive towards analog electronics as compositional tools.

VISION
Het Concreet is a hub for artists, composers and musicians that shape their artistic practice by researching the bandwidth of their interfaces in the domain of sound art and experimental music. Through active debate and creative elaborations with the artists and audiences around us, we contribute to a resilient and responsible artistic practice. 

PROGRAM
Het Concreet has a close affinity with the legacy left by the pioneers of analog music of the 20th century. But instead of solely continuing in the path of early electronic music artists such as Éliane Radigue and Brian Eno, Het Concreet seeks new spaces, platforms and audiences for the music deriving from our quest. Tape is very much an instrument of contemporary value and we are driven by the urgency to express this proposition. In our studio, we actively seek forms of dialogue that give space to subjective experience. We believe this will improve our understanding of our artistic value and how we relate to both history and future. We invite artists, audience members, novices and theorists to participate in this process. By actively questioning, interrupting and expanding upon the way Het Concreet operates, we shape the framework within which our artistic research takes place.

At the core of our practice is our residency program. We invite artist to join us to explore the bandwidth of our analog studio and their own instruments. These quests are shared with audiences through our studio symposia in which we connect the residency program to contextual debates and reflection. In tape listening sessions we gather in the studio to listen together and reflect on a body of compositional work. We regularly collaborate with art institutions in student workshops and masterclasses and perform for public in kaleidoscopic constellations.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Our residency program was founded in 2022 and is the basis of our studio program. We invite artists for a period of three days to join us in the studio. During these days, we collaboratively question our instruments and musical approaches and exercise fresh paths. The residency program explicitly focus on process, not outcome. Previous residents at Het Concreet include: Robin Rimbaud [Scanner], Huba de Graaff, Cecilia Arditto, Renée van Trier, Wouter Jaspers, Lukas de Clerck, Luca Soudant, Timo Tuhkanen and Krishna Sutedja.

STUDIO SYMPOSIA

Our studio symposia are moments in which we gather with our audience around sound, often at the conclusion of a residency. To broaden the scope of the program, we invite speakers to contextualize themes from the residency and to engage with the audience in conversation about what we do, hear, and experience. The thematic backbone of the studio symposia is Brian Eno’s lecture The studio as a compositional tool. Previous studio symposia have included: Noise as a compositional tool, Listening as a compositional tool and Place as a compositional tool.

TAPE LISTENING SESSIONS

With our listening sessions we want to share the experience of listening to an original tape on good sounding equipment, together. Over the past few years, more and more master tapes of electronic music have been arriving at our studio. Time and again we have been impressed by the quality of the pieces, recordings and ideas on these tapes. But what is most striking is that so much electronic music has been made that will never be heard again. With these listening sessions we want to share the experience of listening to an original tape on good sounding equipment.

WORKSHOPS & MASTERCLASSES

When we get the chance to invite international guests such as Nic Collins to organize a workshop with our network, we do so. We are regularly invited for workshops and masterclasses for groups of art students in the Netherlands and Belgium. Artistic exchange with students broadens when we’re invited to make interdisciplinary connections and create crossovers between our practice and the field of creative writing, film, theatre, sound design and music. In 2026, we host our first open call for students and recent graduates to submit a proposal for the development of a new composition that explores the boundaries of analog electronic music. In the past years, we have worked with students from ArtEz Creative Writing (Arnhem), RITCS (Brussels) and Fontys Academy for Music and Performing Arts (Tilburg).

PERFORMANCES

We strongly believe in performing in reasonably unsuited performance settings in the public spaces, such as parking lots, bicycle sheds, churches, shopping streets, etc. These places allow us to openly engage with our direct surroundings and reach audiences that might not easily find their way into our studio. Next to these public performances, we have been invited to play within more established frameworks such as Murf/Murw, Roadburn, Rewire and Tilt Festival.
