Deaf filmmaker Alison O’Daniel came across a news report about the unsolved theft of tubas from a number of high schools in Los Angeles. It became the starting point for a visual poem about how people on the deafness spectrum experience sound. The Tuba Thieves is not a story about thieves or missing tubas, but asks what it means to listen. Dutch sign language interpreter available. Curated by Het Concreet

Roberto Pistolesi is a drummer/performer/composer born in Italy and living in the Netherlands. After having navigated for years through many musical genres, Roberto shifted towards jazz, and he quickly became one of the most representative drummers of the new breed of Italian modern and traditional jazz. Since then, he played and recorded with a huge number of national and international artists, such as Steve Grossman, Dave Liebman, Rick Margitza, Paolo Fresu, Dario Deidda, David Binney (among others), and has been a regular band member of the world-acclaimed saxophonists Stefano Di Battista and Francesco Cafiso. The studio as a compositional tool exposes a working attitude that gives the composer/performer the freedom to exert unlimited influence on the end result: not by devising a composition in advance, but by doing, experimenting and playing with the studio, sounds are created. The idea of the studio as a compositional tool was launched by Brian Eno in a 1979 lecture, and inspires Het Concreet to pose the question: can we sit backΒ andΒ surrender ourselves to a creative process? Composer Anthony Fiumara will give a lecture about the development of the studio as a refuge for experiment. Aafke Romeijn presents new experimental work made during a residency at Het Concreet. Later in the afternoon, Aafke, Anthony and Mathijn den Duijf will discuss suspending your expectations in a composition process. An ode to the studio as a refuge for experiment.Β

We are very excited to welcome composer Cecilia Arditto for a week-long residency in our studio. Her musical work explores the use of everyday objects and challenges our ideas of what a musical instrument is supposed to be. Can you write an overture for toasters? An oratorium for toothbrushes or a duet for crankshaft and pillow? In her project Musique ConcrΓ¨te she composed for tape and second-hand objects, mostly bought in the markets or rescued from the trash. Klank&Komma is a six-day writing lab where cultural journalists, essayists, and creative writers, led by author and audio director RenΓ©e van Marissing, will search for their own writing voice in a critique of sound. Soundβnot necessarily musicβcan take on colors, shapes, textures, ideas, and feelings. The experience of sound is deeply personal: sound doesnβt tell you what itβs about, what to think about, or what to feel. Anything is allowed. Sound demands nothing from the listener, but can become anything.
So how do you write about sound? In Klank&Komma, we explore this question by listening to diverse soundscapes during concerts and workshops, by listening, writing, and reading. Over six days, we will work towards personal essays that explore this uncharted territory. The results will be published in or on the contemporary music magazine Gonzo (circus).
Participants in 2022 were Miriam Rasch, Justin Scholtze, Arthur Kok, Christine Geense, Caspar Stalenhoef, Tanny Dobbelaar and Veerle Spronck.

Composing is constructing layers, textures and spaces in sound and the level of nuances is endless. How βdeepβ is a composer listening to these sounds in a creational process? Can we, as listeners, approach this depth of fields and if not, does it really matter? Or is each very act of listening a compositional tool in itself? We start off our studio symposium with a listening session to a tape piece from our studio resident Huba de Graaff. Her work celebrates the unheard: whether itβs the singing of monkeys, the moans of eroticism or the tired sighs of an officer after acts of genocide. For Huba de Graaff, who has studied sonology and tape composition with Gilius van Bergeyk and Dick Raaijmakers, creating music starts at listening to unheard sounds, voices and spaces next to us. Together with Het Concreet, Huba joins us for a week-long residency. This afternoon, we will listen to the results.

On February 6 2025, we explore physical locality of sound as a compositional tool. Sound recorded on tape has a physical place in the world, it can be traced, held and retraced. But place can also be regarded as a way of creating sound through field recordings, being in dialogue with the environment, or in the proximity of a community that inspires collaboration and experiment. For this studio symposium weβve invited Nic Collins and Peter Todd for a special performance of Stuart MarshallβsΒ Ayton BasementΒ from 1976, using two portable Uher tape recorders and a range of percussive instruments. The piece was first performed atΒ Ayton Basement,Β a legendary artist-run performance space in Newcastle Upon Tyne. In 2019, Peter Todd and Nicolas Collins reconstructed the performance from memory. Following the performance, we will host a panel talk on the physical domain as an incentive to sound in relation to artist-run spaces.

Lukas De Clerck is a musician and sound-artist from Belgium. His artistic practice is centered around the aulos, an ancient Greco-Roman, double-reeded double pipe, that got extinct more than a millennium ago. After several years of delving deep in the practice of aulos reed making and playing replicas of ancient instruments, he opens up his inevitably auto-didact artistic output. Following the desire to strip the instrument from its enigmatic past, De Clerck created a new, contemporary aulos: the telescopic aulos of atlas. This instrument formed the foundation for his three day long residencies in Het Concreet in April 2025. The deep sonority of the instrument proved to be a match made in heaven with our tape manipulations.Β

On September 13 and 14, Het Concreet will give two performances in the former Paduakerk in Tilburg, now the Hagemeier glass studio, as part of Open Monument Day. Both concerts start at 3 p.m. and are free of charge.Β
Together with composer Jorn Jaap Prenger, Het Concreet is working on a piece that takes the acoustics of the church and the materiality of glass as its starting point. While Prengler focuses on the analysis of space and prepared string instruments, Het Concreet develops sounds from glass and tape. Religious grandeur, heritage, and experimentation intertwine.

On the 25th of October we will host the second event in a series of listening sessions: the Tape Listening Sessions. With these listening sessions we want to share the experience of listening to an original tape on good sounding equipment. Our second guest is Jos Smolders, a Tilburg-based composer of electronic and electroacoustic works. Since 1980, he has built up an extensive repertoire. Smolders is active as mastering engineer, producing albums and restoring 20th-century electronic music. This evening will center around Smolders’ connection to the pioneering work of Pierre Henry. Henry is one of the founding fathers of musique concrΓ¨te. Henry was also the direct reason for Jos Smolders to choose electronic music as a creative expression.

A British foley artist is commissioned to create sound effects for an Italian horror film. Once in the studio, he discovers that the job is very different from what he expected. A cinematic meta-experience by Peter Strickland that delves into psychological depth, creeps under your skin in a terrifying way, and leaves more to the imagination than your ears can handle. Each year, when the days shorten and daylight slowly moves away, we turn to our archive to listen back to the sounds that have emerged from our studio practice that year, collaboration with studio residents, unexpected encounters and moments of fierce musicing. And as one should, we merge what we love into a mixtape to commemorate new loves and blasting sounds of 2025. Join us on December 11, 2025 to listen to our 2025 mixtape.
