On 'Materiality' Mathijs Leeuwis explores different types of materials that can be found in large numbers among our waste. A focus on the aesthetic value of thrown out stuff.

 

That which we dismiss as obsolete or waste, often once was an object of value. Het Concreet is built up with old analog equipment, which was originally considered the best of the best, but is nowadays written off as outdated. This thinking in terms of progress versus stagnation was the basis on which this EP was created. 
The four pieces on this EP are full of overlap and reuse. Technical imperfections and malfunctions of equipment are placed in plain sight: the inherent noise of a tape echo, the slipping of the recorder and electronic hums, they are all present as voices that have something to say. The last piece was recorded on a pile of trash at the waste processing company in Tilburg, a small ensemble of rubbish.
