GALIBIER is a series of pedal steel compositions, soundscapes and musical collaborations dedicated to the greatest and most painful climbs you can encounter. Published as an album in 2018 on vinyl, Mathijs Leeuwis "pushed boundaries", according to the press. Galibier is about climbing mountains, hypnotized by the vastness of the landscape, and remembering some of the most intruiging stories in cycling history.
Mathijs Leeuwis, Mathijn den Duijf, Marzio Scholten and Bartho Staalman landed in Kytopia at Oudegracht Utrecht (former pop temple Tivoli) for an improvised recording of GALIBIER. During the recording session on analog tape, everything came together, centered around a tape loop: pedal steel drones by Mathijs Leeuwis, wicked guitar sounds by Marzio Scholten, wandering piano lines by Mathijn den Duijf, thrilling drums by Bartho Staalman, capturing live visuals by Janine Hendriks (Kaftwerk), mesmerizing lights by Wout Hoste and Bas Rombouts and awesome camerawork by Kim Vreys and Anneroos Goosen.
