ALBUM RELEASE
On Saturday October 21st, we – sound collective Het Concreet – present our first album from our studio space in Tilburg. Buy a ticket, get two film screenings plus an intimate studio session starring wild frequencies by Mathijn den Duijf, Mathijs Leeuwis, Daniel Cross and Roberto Pistolesi. It’ll be good.
Strangely similar to the original is released on vinyl and cassette. A travelogue, a diary in sound to our quest to explore every possible frequency that magnetic tape can carry. A way to contribute something physical to this world of ideas.
Filmmakers Anneroos Goosen and Daniel Cross created two short films to the music of our album. Two visual meditations on the world of sound, on the original and its mirror image. The films will be screened only once before they enter festival competition in 2024.

STRANGELY SIMILAR TO THE ORIGINAL IS A SONIC INQUIRY TO THE DEPTHS OF ANALOG TAPE BY DUTCH SOUND COLLECTIVE HET CONCREET.
Het Concreet is a Dutch sound collective dedicated to finding new sounds by experimenting with analog electronic devices, magnetic tape and acoustics. Our analog ambitions are rooted in our studio space in Tilburg, where we seek to find new meanings of sound by working with techniques that have become largely obsolete in today’s world. Our main instrument – and in some ways our teacher – is magnetic tape. When put on tape, sound becomes a physical substance, subject to the rules of physics and predetermined to decay. We intend to explore every possible frequency that magnetic tape can carry. Strangely similar to the original is our travelogue, our diary in sound, our way of contributing something physical to this world of ideas.
Why use analog technology? Working with analog material means working with attentiveness and surrender. The material is unpredictable, but gives infinite depth to sound. In an age of speed and manufacturability, magnetic tape reveals to us something of the essence of human nature: materiality, volatility and aesthetics.
Het Concreet never walks alone. We are convinced of the value of meeting different voices, opposite ideas and a radical practices. Therefore, this vinyl release is also a reflection of our encounters with other artists who challenge and inspire us. Together with the release of this album, two short films will première that play with visual strategies to magnetic tape, and can be viewed as a travelling companion to our album. Finally, ten monotype prints echoing the shapes, shades and patterns in our studio space will be sold through our Bandcamp.
