TAPE LISTENING SESSION: JOS SMOLDERS & PIERRE HENRY
MASTER TAPES, CONTEXT & PERFORMANCE
On the 25th of October we will host the second event in a series of listening sessions: the Tape Listening Sessions. With these listening sessions we want to share the experience of listening to an original tape on good sounding equipment.
Our second guest is Jos Smolders, a Tilburg-based composer of electronic and electroacoustic works. Since 1980, he has built up an extensive repertoire. Smolders is active as mastering engineer, producing albums and restoring 20th-century electronic music. This evening will centre around Smolders' connection to the pioneering work of Pierre Henry. Henry is one of the founding fathers of musique concrète. Henry was also the direct reason for Jos Smolders to choose electronic music as a creative expression.
Through music historical research and his own experimentation, Smolders developed his own repertoire while keeping a strong connection with Pierre Henry. In 1998 he interviewed Henry, in 2014 he mastered a retrospective album and in 2017 he created a tribute to the then recently deceased composer. This work by Smolders, L'Oreille [C]ouverte, was presented in Geneva in 2022 and will be performed once more again at our Tape Listening Session on the 25th of October. In addition, pieces by Henry will be played on vinyl, and Jos Smolders will talk about his relationship with the French composer.
