RADIO CONCRÈTE: RADIO AS A COMPOSITIONAL TOOL
Radio Concrète explores radio as a field for experiment and play: a set of ideas and discoveries that incites us to broadcast ‘on air’. After its creation in 1895, radio rapidly became an institute but to this day remains open for DIY culture and accessible community creation. During a 12-hour marathon, hosted from our studio space in Tilburg, we celebrate radio as an arena for play. We reflect on & listen to historical and contemporary radio art performances, and listen to the sonic development of the live creation of a circuit.
With broadcasts from the plains of New Mexico, a New Zealand beach and a hunter’s cabin in the Thüringen forest, we start the day by listening to landscapes and some special performances. Over the course of the day, we will reflect on our own fascinations with radio practices, radio as platform for sound art and a freehaven for play. Radio Concrète offers live performances by Scanner & Het Concreet, and Marieke van de Ven with a session by Sharon Stewart inspired by Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening practice, a performance lecture by Margherita Brillada, and indepth talks hosted by Steph Byrne. Join us outside of the studio in Tilburg for a soldering jamsession with Veerle Pennock, and pick up an oldschool ether radio to enjoy the broadcast all-analog. At the end of the day, we open our doors to the public for a live performance with Scanner.

DAWN | 06:00-09:00 | WAKE-UP RADIO
In the first hours of our program, we live tune into different landscapes around the world. Each visit will be a full hour of live landscape-listening. Can we hear the sun rise in Germany, or set in New Zealand? When we travel back in time from New Zealand to New Mexico, do we hear the echoes of the day before? Halfway through the hour, we listen to an acoustic live performance on site.
MORNING | 09:00-12:00 | RADIO REFLECTIONS
The world is up, and we take over our radio marathon with in-depth talks on the what/how/why of a radio marathon. Why does radio fascinate us? What is radio? How do we use it as a platform for sound art? Radio host Steph Byrne talks to Robin Rimbaud & Het Concreet, and introduces our live soldering jam session with Veerle Pennock - available for walk-ins all day. We listen to a radio lecture performance by Margherita Brillada, who researches radio poetics.
MID DAY | 12:00-15:00 | RADIO PRACTICES
We’re halfway and take a dive. We reflect on radio practices from the arts world, with Steph Byrne, Margherita Brillada & Robin Rimbaud. Every once in a while, we check into our broadcasting sites. After reflecting on practices, we host a deep listening session by Sharon Stewart, gradually moving into a live performance by Marieke van de Ven from the studio.
AFTERNOON | 15:00-18:00 | ON AIR
The culmination of the days and hours before: a live performance block. We invite the public to come closer during the live residency presentation with Scanner. People can get a small radio receiver at Het Concreet and can walk around the area to listen to the live performance. Chips & drinks on the parking lot, people can watch or join in on the soldering session. At 17:00, we open the doors for a live performance in the studio.
RESIDENCY
In the week of November 13, Robin Rimbaud (Scanner) will join us in our studio as a week-long resident. In our residency program, we ask people to come play with us. We abandon our idioms and preconceived ideas and explore the domain of sound in our analog ambitions.
Contributions by Robin Rimbaud (Scanner), Het Concreet, Margherita Brillada, Veerle Pennock, Clara Byom, Bas van Druten, Nele Möller, Marieke van de Ven, Sharon Stewart, and hosted by Steph Byrne & N.A.Radio. Radio Concrète is supported by the city of Tilburg and Kunstloc Brabant.
